Brent's Adventure

To preface what happened- Brent started getting sick the day before he had his accident.  He had flu like symptoms and did not feel well.  So Tuesday he stayed home from work.  I am going to write my account of what happened and then Brent and Kayley's accounts.  It is really long so sorry, but I want to put it in writing.  And some day I will print it out for my journal.
So I will start by saying that one of the pictures below is graphic.  Beware.

On Tuesday May 10th I had just gotten Hannah to bed and was sitting down with Brent's laptop to check my email.  I faintly heard him call my name from the bedroom.  Just a couple of seconds later he came out of the bedroom staggering towards the kitchen.  Then he passed out and fell down onto the kitchen floor.  Instantly there was a pool of blood around his head.  I frantically (and extremely loud) yelled for Kayley (who was in bed) to help me. I couldn't find the house phone but then saw my cell phone so I grabbed it and called 911 at 9:18 pm.  Immediately the call was answered and I told them that Brent had passed out and needed stitches.  Kayley came into the kitchen about this time and screamed (probably very similar to what I felt like doing) and asked me if he was dead.  I told her no and that I needed a towel to put on his head to stop the bleeding.  While I was on the phone she brought me a queen flat sheet, but rather than questioning her I put it to his head and applied pressure.  He woke up just before that (probably only a minute or two after the fall, but it seemed alot longer).  As I was on the phone Brent insisted on getting up (which I had been told by the operator to not let him do) and go to the bathroom.  How am I supposed to stop someone that is more than 40 lbs bigger than me from doing what they want and keep pressure to his head?  Didn't happen.  About that time Kayley came into the bathroom (she kept leaving and I'm not sure where she went) and I asked her to call the Johnson's and ask Mary or Jeremy to come over because we would be going to the hospital.  Within two or three minutes of getting off the phone with 911 the firefighters were walking in the house.  Eight men walked in and started working on Brent.  Lots of men in a small area.  Mary luckily got there right after them and started helping comfort Kayley.   Within just a short amount of time, Brent got on the stretcher and was taken out to the ambulance.  I quickly made sure that I had water and some food and the Ensign and Book of Mormon and headed to the ER.  Before I left Kayley and I said prayer.  I was trying to comfort her but I think it was more for me.
I started driving at 9:52 pm.  I know the times because that is when I made calls on my cell phone.  I called my mom to let her know what was going on.  She was able to comfort me and help me make it there in one piece, because up until that phone call I hadn't cried so I wouldn't frighten Kayley anymore.  But as soon as I heard her voice I was bawling.  About 3 minutes later as I parked the car I was composed and went to the waiting area.  It was extremely busy so I stepped outside to call Brent's parents.  Unfortunately I couldn't get a hold of them on their phones so I went back in.  I asked the receptionist where I could find my husband and she told me there was no one there by that name.  I just about started hyperventilating.  I felt that I should walk outside, so I did.  I then noticed an ambulance and the driver was just getting back into the cab.  So I went over and thankfully it was one of the EMTs that had been at the house and he told me that it was just extremely busy so Brent was there and they were just taking a little bit to impute the info into the computer.  By the time I got back to the waiting area (maybe 2 or 3 minutes later)  his name came up and they directed me back to where he was waiting in the hall for a room.
Brent looked a lot better after getting the IV fluids in him.  The doctor checked him out and ordered xrays, CAT scans, and blood cultures.
It was a long night.  Thankfully all of the tests came back good.  Nothing had been damaged with the fall.  So while we were there he had two bags of IV fluid, two different antibiotics (that took 3 hours to administer),  five stitches, and lots of waiting time.
When I would check in with Mary, Kayley was still awake.  She had decided to watch ELF because it was one movie that didn't have any bad or scary parts.
When we finally got home around 5 am, we came home to a CLEAN house (Mary had cleaned everything up in the kitchen, washed the dishes, cleaned the dining room, folded laundry and taken care of Kenzie when she woke up).  I got Brent to bed and was just about to start laying down  when Kenzie then Hannah woke up.  So I got to start the day early, or I guess it would actually mean keep the previous day going even longer.  My sweet sister in law came and took Kenzie to play and brought us dinner.  So while she was gone and Hannah was napping I got an hour long nap that was heavenly.  I don't think a nap has ever felt so good.

These pictures I took were taken with a phone and so they aren't the best quality.  I had thought about taking a picture of Brent being taken out to the ambulance on the stretcher but didn't think that would be appropriate.  And then I forgot the camera to take any others.  Oh well.
Right after his wound was cleaned and just before his stitches.

This was right after the stitches were put in.

I am so glad that it all turned out okay. I can't even imagine how terrifying this would be. And I don't want to.
